overbey I found a blog for you

It doesn’t look like it stands on the biggest plot, but this 1940s two-bedroom midcentury modern property in Berkeley, California, USA has bags of character.

In fact, it doesn’t look like the biggest house either, covering 1,052 sq. ft. in total (on a plot down as 5,985 sq. ft.). But we like what we see in this 1946 build.

Of course, things have changed since 1946, when this house was built for an (unnamed) architect and his family. In fact, it underwent an update back in 1998 and judging by the photos, things have been maintained very well since.

We love the wall of glass, the wood panelling in the living room and the generally clean finish of this place. It’s one of those house you can imagine just walking into with a minimum of possessions and making your own.

If or when you do get in, you’ll find two bedrooms and a bathroom, a galley-style kitchen and an open living room, as well as ‘bonus room’ below, which sounds rather intriguing.

$635,000 is the price, which works out at around £380,900.

Abandoned House in the Woods Taken Over by Wild Animals

Finnish photographer Kai Fagerström presents unique photo series, where he captures wild animals making themselves comfortable in abandoned houses in the woods of Finland. Titled The House in the Woods, the photo series is set in cottages near Kai’s summer house, which were abandoned by their tenants after the owner of the place died in a fire. Award-winning photographer noticed how the place was slowly being reclaimed by the nature, and what started as a few snapshots, ended up being a book, published in Finnish, German, and English.

“Deserted buildings are so full of contradictions,” says Kai. “I am fascinated by the way nature reclaims spaces that were, essentially, only ever on loan to humans.” Kai usually works with a clear image of what he wants to achieve in his head, although it make take some time for all elements to fall into place. The photographer has enough patience, however: “This is fine with me,” he says. “The journey is more important than the destination.“

Two pairs of Anthony Cleverleys

by Simon Crompton

Anthony Cleverley shoes

While meeting the impossibly nice Xavier Aubercy last week, we got talking about the archive of shoes owned by Arturo Lopez, a friend and customer of Xavier’s grandfather Andre Aubercy.

Lopez was a customer of many shoemakers, and his collection is often used by Aubercy for inspiration. One of those makers was Anthony Cleverley, which gave us the opportunity to compare a pair of original patent slippers he made with the shoes I was wearing – modern bespoke Cleverleys made with Anthony’s distinctive elongated toe.

It was a pretty good match, although the thinness of the leather used in the originals was striking. It felt more like paper than leather. The heel, as you can see below, was also rather higher. Note the beautifully smooth and softly curving line down the heel cup and into the heel stack.

Conor Oberst Sues Rape Accuser for Defamation

by Evan Minsker

Conor Oberst Sues Rape Accuser for Defamation

Update 2/20 7:45 a.m.: Oberst's camp has issued a statement. Read it below.

In December, an individual left a series of posts in the comments section of an XOJane article—a story about an abusive rock star boyfriend—suggesting that she had been raped by Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes 10 years ago. Oberst's publicist called the accusations "absolutely, unequivocally false". Now, Oberst is suing for defamation, TMZ reports.

The woman claimed to have been 16 years old at the time and allegedly wrote, "Conor took a lot from me including my virginity, my dignity, and self-esteem."

According to TMZ, Oberst says he never met her and that she had written positive things online about Oberst and Bright Eyes as recently as January 2013. He's reportedly suing for over $1 million and claims his reputation has been damaged by her accusations.

Statement:

Today Conor Oberst filed a libel lawsuit in a New York federal court against Joanie Faircloth, a resident of North Carolina, who falsely accused him of rape in the comments section of the xoJane website in December of 2013 and again, some days later, on her Tumblr page. The suit counters Faircloth’s baseless allegations and states that Oberst never had any physical contact with her, either at the concert in Durham, NC at which she claims the attack took place, or at any other time. The only connection between Oberst and Faircloth was one of artist and fan – a fan who has posted laudatory comments about Oberst elsewhere online, including describing attending his band's concert as the "Best memory ever!"

The lawsuit filed today outlines Faircloth’s history of inventing stories and personalities online in order to gain attention. Although her false statements about Oberst have since been deleted from the locations where they were initially posted online, Oberst's suit alleges that her malicious lies spread across the Internet and are archived by multiple blogs. Through his attorneys, Oberst requested that Faircloth recant her false accusations, but she ignored the requests. Oberst has thus been forced to proceed with this libel suit in order to set the record straight and to clear his name.

Oberst is seeking to promote the truth and repair the distress this has brought upon him and his family. Oberst intends to donate the proceeds of this suit to charities benefitting the victims of violence against women.

“I left my measurements with a tailor, with directions not to make the uniform until I notified him whether it was to be for infantry or dragoons. Notice did not reach me for several weeks, and then it took at least a week to get the letter of instructions to the tailor and two more to make the clothes and have them sent to me. This was a time of great suspense. I was impatient to get in my uniform and see how it looked, and probably wanted my old school-mates, particularly the girls, to see me in it.”

Richard Sherman's Best Behavior

by Ta-Nehisi Coates
Russian Sledges

via firehose

firehose shared this story from Ta-Nehisi Coates : The Atlantic.

BREAKING: It's racist to say anything negative about Richard Sherman.

— John Podhoretz (@jpodhoretz) January 20, 2014

We just got set back 500 years...

— Andre Iguodala (@andre) January 20, 2014

It's worth heading over to Deadspin for a moment and checking out both Greg Howard 's penetrating piece on the reaction to Richard Sherman and Samer Kalef's aggregation of the racist bile directed his way. Podhoretz was responding to a tweet he sent out asserting that Sherman was a "role model for today's Taliban youth," presumably because ... I because....I actually don't know. And neither did Podhoretz who deleted the tweet and claimed it was just a joke. The tweet from Iguodala just makes me sad, mostly because it reflects a rather ancient strain of thought in black America that which holds that men like Richard Sherman are the reason we can't have nice things.

A few points of biography: Richard Sherman is a the son of sanitation worker and teacher. He finished second in his class in high school and then went to Stanford. He graduated from Stanford with a 3.9 GPA. Here is how Sherman he describes his introduction to the school:

"I was with kids from prestigious private schools, and they were drawing comparisons between Plato and Aristotle," says Sherman. "A lot went over my head. I hadn't even read The Iliad yet. I had to check out all these books just so I could know what everybody was talking about."

Here is what Richard Sherman is doing now:

Beverly and Kevin now live in a well-landscaped community in Compton, but she still works for Children's Services and he still drives his truck every morning at 4 a.m., a Seahawks sticker plastered across his helmet. Their home is wallpapered with pictures of their children: Richard, Branton and 22-year-old Kristyna, who runs a hair salon out of the Shermans' garage. (Seahawks receiver Sidney Rice is a client.) The first photo you see, upon opening the front door, is of Richard's commencement ceremony at Stanford.

Across the street lives an English teacher from Dominguez named Michelle Woods who charters a bus every spring break for Dominguez students to visit colleges throughout California. "Most of them think Cal State is their only option," she says. When Sherman was at Stanford, he made sure the bus swung by Palo Alto, and he led the tours himself. "I'm here; you can be too," he told the group every year as he advised them on classes and grants.

Here is how Sherman describes himself:

I'm an awkward guy. People used to tell me all the time, You're not from here. And that's the way I felt, like somebody took me from somewhere else and dropped me down into this place. I was strange because I went to class, did the work, read the books and was still pretty good at sports. If you're like me, people think you're weird. They pull you in different directions. But those people aren't going where you're going. I know the jock stereotype—cool guy, walking around with your friends, not caring about school, not caring about anything. I hate that stereotype. I want to destroy it. I want to kill it.

I don't think this is what people think when they see Sherman trash-talking. There's some weird notion in our society that holds hold that trash-talking is for the classless and stupid. I don't know what it means to be "classless" in an organization like the NFL. And then there is the racism from onlookers, who are incapable of perceiving in Sherman an individual, and instead see the sum of all American fears—monkey, fears--monkey, thug, terrorist, nigger.

And then there is us, ashamed at our own nakedness, at our humanity. Racism is a kind of fatalism, so seductive, that it enthralls even its enthralls even it's victims. But we will not get out of this by being on our best behavior—sometimes behavior--sometimes it has taken our worse. There's never been a single thing wrong with black people people, that the total destruction of white supremacy would not fix.

can't watch

A day after its release from jail, Pussy Riot tried to stage its punk protest today in Sochi, only to be met by whip-wielding police officers. Six group members—including the recently freed Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina—donned the collective’s signature ski masks and were about to launch into “Putin Will Teach You To Love The Motherland,” when at least 10 Cossack militiamen intervened. The Cossacks pulled the masks from the women’s heads, used pepper spray, and beat Tolokonnikova with a whip as she lay on the ground. Alyokina has since Tweeted photos of the group’s injuries, including a photo of Tolokonnikova in what looks to be a hospital bed. There’s also video of the whole thing below that is incredibly hard to watch.

Police eventually arrived to calm the scene, and no arrests were made.

Reindeer Get Reflecting Antlers

by Miss Cellania

In Lapland, where reindeer herds are kept as livestock, yet graze freely most of the year, a new technique is being used to reduce the number of reindeer struck by cars at night. I cannot make the Finnish Sami language article translate into English, but according to redditor og_nichander, the antlers are sprayed with a reflective material that only shows up when headlights shine on it. Therefore,  you won’t see eerie herds of antlers moving in the night -unless you are about to hit them with your car. Or you really, truly believe Santa is coming tonight.

firehose shared this story from A.V. Club:
HEY OVERBEY

Billy Corgan has announced plans to perform an eight-hour concert inspired by Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha. Seriously. Corgan’s show is going down Feb. 28 at Madame ZuZu’s Tea Shop—which he owns—in the suburbs of Chicago and will “be centered around an ambient/musical interpretation of Herman Hesse’s Siddartha; built by modular synthesis, on the fly.” The sounds will also be accompanied by readings of Hesse’s 1922 text, which tells the story of “the spiritual journey of self-discovery of a man named Siddhartha,” and touches on issues of philosophy including (but not limited to) existentialism, transcendentalism, and Lebenskrankheit. Finally fans will have the chance to hear spiritual leader Billy Corgan’s thoughts on life, death, and life after death.

As with all of Corgan’s Madame ZuZu’s events, there’s no charge for admission—not that anyone would have pointed to a high-ticket price ...
